Literacy Component
Adult resource book:
Soerens, Matthew, and Jenny Hwang. Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2009. Print.
This book was an incredibly helpful resource particularly when I was designing the lesson on the paths to citizenship. Before designing this unit I had very little information about the immigration process. This book was informative and gave me insight into multiple perspectives on the immigration reform issue.
Student Books
Yep, Laurence. Dragonwings: Golden Mountain Chronicles, 1903. New York: HarperTrophy, 2000. Print.
This is a very well researched historical fiction novel about a child who immigrates to the states to join his father. This is a nice book to show the story of Chinese immigration.
Resau, Laura. Red Glass. New York: Delacorte, 2007. Print.
This story is the story of Mexican American girl who is a citizen and her encounter with illegal immigration. She encounters a child who was found lost in the dessert. A poignant account that gives the story of immigration from another perspective.
Jean, Wyclef, and Anthony Bozza. Purpose: An Immigrant's Story. New York: It, 2012. Print.
Another Immigrant story, but this one about a hip hop artist from Haiti. This book should help tell the immigrant story to capture the attention of more students in my classroom.
Ryan, Pam Muñoz. Esperanza Rising. New York: Scholastic, 2000. Print
The story of a young girl and her mother when they immigrate to America during the Great Depression.
