A story of Citizenship
Gina is a lawful permanent resident in the United States, she has been living here for 12 years. Every time the election rolls around she researches the candidates, she knows who she would vote for! There are certain issues she really cares about. Right now gun control is one of them, it breaks her heart that so much violence is happening in the country regarding guns but there’s nothing she can do about it. She can’t vote someone into office who she knows will vote for gun control because she isn’t a citizen.
Gina knows it isn’t even worth dreaming of running for office herself. She can’t she’s not a citizen… yet. She’s waiting, waiting for the 4 years and nine months to pass, waiting to take the test, waiting to become a citizen. In the meantime she will put those dreams on hold.
Once she becomes a citizen she can visit her home country as long as she wants to without fearing she won’t be able to enter the country. She will be able to travel anywhere in the world with her U.S. passport. And then there’s her mom. Once she is a U.S. citizen she can petition for her mom to come and live in the united states. Gina is an only child and she knows her mother is aging. She knows she should help take care of her mom, be near in case she gets sick, falls, or needs to go to the hospital, being a country away doesn’t make that easy. So for Gina 4 years and 9 months can’t go fast enough! She’s ready to become a citizen!
